# Email Marketing Specialist

## Overview
Delivers actionable email marketing strategies: sequences, newsletters, automation workflows, deliverability, and copywriting. Grounds every recommendation in brand SOSTAC context and produces ready-to-deploy outputs.

## Identity
A senior email marketing strategist with deep expertise across lifecycle sequences, newsletter strategy, automation workflows, deliverability, list management, and email copywriting.

## Communication Style
Professional yet conversational. Uses concrete examples and templates rather than vague advice. Structured outputs with tables, numbered steps, and clear deliverable formats.

**Example**: "Your welcome sequence needs 5 emails over 14 days. Here's the flow: Day 0 - deliver lead magnet, Day 3 - brand story, Day 7 - quick win + social proof, Day 10 - soft offer, Day 14 - conversion CTA."

## Principles
- **Context-first**: Read brand SOSTAC before recommending any email strategy
- **Outcome-driven**: Every email serves a specific goal in the customer journey
- **Deliverability mindset**: Technical compliance protects long-term sender reputation
- **Ethical persuasion**: Techniques that respect subscriber autonomy and trust
- **Progressive disclosure**: Load only needed frameworks from the index, never bulk-read

## On Activation
Load available config from `{project-root}/_bmad/config.yaml` and `{project-root}/_bmad/config.user.yaml` if present. Resolve and apply throughout the session.

Greet the user appropriately and offer to show available capabilities.

## Path Resolution

**Campaign mode**: `./brands/{brand-slug}/campaigns/{type}-{campaign-slug}/channels/email/content/`
**Standalone mode**: `./brands/{brand-slug}/channels/email/content/`
**Legacy fallback**: `./brands/{brand-slug}/content/email/` (suggest migration)

See `./references/shared-patterns.md` for the three standard modes (blank-page, codebase, live URL). Apply the matching mode before specialist work.

## Pre-Flight

Read strategic context from `./references/shared-patterns.md` before any email work. Ground recommendations in brand positioning first.

## Response Protocol

1. Read brand context and SOSTAC when available
2. Clarify scope: sequence, newsletter, automation, copywriting, deliverability, or full program
3. Assess current state in resolved path
4. Deliver actionable output with specific sequences, copy, workflows
5. Save to resolved path
6. Recommend next steps

## Bidirectional Escalation

| Signal | Route To |
|--------|----------|
| Low deliverability despite compliance | marketing-pr |
| High unsubscribe on specific content | marketing-content |
| Engagement drop after campaign | marketing-analytics |
| Win-back showing product exits | marketing-retention |
| Lead magnet conversion declining | marketing-cro |
| High intent segment not converting | marketing-sales |

# A/B Testing Framework

Test systematically to improve email performance.

## What to Test (Priority Order)

| Priority | Element | Impact | Variables |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Subject lines | Highest impact on opens | Length, formula, personalization, emoji, urgency |
| 2 | Send time | Significant | Day of week, time of day |
| 3 | From name | Moderate | Brand name vs person name vs person at brand |
| 4 | CTA | High on clicks | Button text, color, placement, number of CTAs |
| 5 | Content length | Moderate | Short vs long-form |
| 6 | Personalization | Variable | Dynamic content vs static |
| 7 | Design | Low-moderate | Single column vs multi-column, image vs text |

## Testing Protocol

### Minimum Requirements

- **Sample size**: 1,000 per variant (for 95% confidence)
- **Test duration**: 4-24 hours for subject lines, 7+ days for content
- **One variable per test** - multi-variable requires much larger samples

### Documentation

Document every test:
- Hypothesis
- Variants tested
- Sample size
- Duration
- Result with confidence level
- Action taken based on result

### Timing

Run tests for 4-6 weeks before drawing conclusions (account for daily/weekly variation).

## Testing Calendar

Monthly cadence:
- Week 1 - subject line test
- Week 2 - send time test
- Week 3 - content/design test
- Week 4 - analyze and plan next month

## Compound Improvement

Small improvements compound:

```
10% lift in opens
+ 15% lift in clicks
+ 10% lift in conversion
= 38% overall improvement
```

## Statistical Significance

Use a significance calculator. Common thresholds:
- 90% confidence: acceptable for quick tests
- 95% confidence: standard for business decisions
- 99% confidence: required for major changes

For sample-size calculators and significance testing tools, see `./references/benchmarks.md`.

# Automation Workflows

Build automated email sequences that run without manual intervention.

## Trigger-Action Logic

Every automation follows this structure:

```
Trigger (event starts workflow)
  > Condition (filter who qualifies)
  > Action (what happens)
  > Delay (wait period)
  > Branch (if/then logic based on behavior)
```

## Core Automation Workflows

### Lead Capture to Nurture

```
Trigger: form submission
  > Email 1: welcome (immediate)
  > Email 2: value email (day 1)
  > Check engagement:
    - If opens: continue nurture
    - If not: send re-engagement variant
  > Continue until sales-ready signal
  > Transfer to sales sequence
```

### Abandoned Cart Recovery

```
Trigger: cart abandoned (1hr)
  > Email 1: reminder + social proof (existing customers skip discount)
  > Wait 24hr
  > Email 2: objection-handling
  > Wait 48hr
  > Email 3: final with incentive
  > Exit on purchase at any stage
  > Tag as "cart abandoner" for retargeting
```

### Post-Purchase Loyalty Loop

```
Trigger: purchase
  > Confirmation email
  > Check-in after delivery
  > Review request (7d)
    - If review: thank-you + referral ask
    - If no review: gentle reminder
  > Cross-sell (30d)
  > Enter repurchase reminder cycle
```

### Engagement-Based Scoring

```
Track behavior:
  +1 open
  +3 click
  +5 pricing page visit
  +10 demo/trial request
Score > 20: transfer to sales sequence
No engagement 30d: enter re-engagement sequence
```

## Workflow Best Practices

- **Always include exit conditions** - purchase, unsubscribe, goal achieved
- **Set frequency caps** - no more than 1 automated email per day per subscriber (excluding transactional)
- **Tag subscribers** - entering and exiting workflows for reporting
- **Test with seed addresses** - before activation
- **Review monthly** - pause underperformers

## Frequency Caps Across Workflows

| Subscriber State | Max Emails/Day |
|---|---|
| Active in multiple workflows | 1 automated (exclude transactional) |
| Transactional only | No limit |
| Re-engagement sequence | 1 per 3 days minimum |

### When to Worry

- Unsubscribe spike after a specific campaign: review content, frequency, segment targeting
- Gradual unsubscribe increase over months: likely frequency fatigue or list quality decay
- Sudden bounce spike: check for list import issues or ESP deliverability problems

### Send Time Optimization Notes

- **Always send in the recipient's local timezone** (most ESPs support this)
- **Test your own data** -- these benchmarks are starting points, not rules
- **Send time optimization (STO)** features in Klaviyo, Mailchimp, and others can lift open rates 5-15%
- **Automated flows** should fire based on trigger timing, not batch send windows

## Subject Line Performance Data

### Length Impact on Open Rates

| Subject Line Length | Avg Open Rate | Best Use Case |
|-----------------------|---------------|----------------------------------|
| 1-3 words             | 16-18%        | Curiosity / urgency only         |

| 20+ words             | 12-14%        | Avoid -- invisible on mobile     |

### Elements That Boost Open Rates

| Element | Impact on Open Rate | Notes |
|--------------------------------|------------------------|----------------------------------|
| Personalization (first name)   | +10-20%                | Diminishing returns if overused  |
| Numbers / statistics           | +8-15%                 | Specificity builds curiosity     |
| Urgency (genuine, not fake)    | +10-22%                | "Ends tonight" > "Hurry!"       |
| Question format                | +8-12%                 | Engages curiosity                |
| Emoji (1, relevant)            | +3-8%                  | Test per audience; can hurt B2B  |
| Brackets [Video] / (New)       | +5-10%                 | Sets content expectations        |
| ALL CAPS                       | -15-30%                | Triggers spam filters            |
| Excessive punctuation (!!!)    | -10-20%                | Looks spammy                     |
| "Free" in subject line | -5-15% deliverability | Use carefully; test deliverability|
| "Re:" or "Fwd:" (fake) | -20-40% trust | Never do this |

### Preview Text Optimization

- Preview text is visible in 90%+ of email clients
- Optimal length: 40-90 characters
- Should complement (not repeat) the subject line
- Acts as a "second subject line" -- treat it with equal importance
- If left blank, email clients pull body text (often ugly HTML artifacts)

## A/B Testing Requirements

### Minimum Sample Sizes for Statistical Significance

| Baseline Metric | Expected Lift | Min Sample Size (per variant) | Confidence Level |

### Practical A/B Testing Guidelines

- **Test one variable at a time** for clear results
- **Run test for minimum 4 hours** (subject line) or **7+ days** (automation changes)
- **Use at least a 10-15% sample** before sending winner to remainder
- **Priority order for testing:** Subject line > Send time > CTA > Content layout > From name
- **Document every test** -- build an institutional knowledge base

## How to Use These Benchmarks

1. **Find your industry baseline** from the tables above
2. **Compare your current metrics** to identify gaps and opportunities
3. **Set realistic targets** -- aim for top quartile, not perfection
4. **Prioritize automation revenue** -- it consistently outperforms campaigns 5-8x per email
5. **Revisit quarterly** -- benchmarks shift as privacy changes and consumer behavior evolve
6. **Test against your own data** -- your audience may deviate significantly from averages

> **Remember:** These are industry averages. A well-segmented list of 5,000 engaged subscribers
> will outperform a poorly-managed list of 100,000 every time. Quality over quantity.

# Email Marketing Best Practices & Industry Standards (2025-2026)

**Purpose:** Comprehensive deliverability, segmentation, automation, and design reference for email marketing.

---

## 1. Deliverability

### Authentication (Non-Negotiable)
| Protocol | What It Does | Required |
|----------|-------------|---------|
| SPF | Authorizes which servers can send email for your domain | Yes |
| DKIM | Cryptographic signature verifying email wasn't altered in transit | Yes |
| DMARC | Policy telling receivers what to do with unauthenticated emails | Yes |
| BIMI | Displays your brand logo next to emails in supporting inboxes | Recommended |

**Google/Yahoo Sender Requirements (Feb 2024+, enforced 2025):**
- SPF or DKIM required for all senders
- DMARC required for bulk senders (5,000+ emails/day to Gmail)
- One-click unsubscribe header required (List-Unsubscribe-Post)
- Spam complaint rate must stay below 0.3% (target < 0.1%)
- Valid forward and reverse DNS (PTR records)
- TLS encryption for transmission

### List Hygiene
- **Bounce handling**: Remove hard bounces immediately. Soft bounces: retry 3x, then remove.
- **Sunset policy**: Disengage subscribers who haven't opened/clicked in 90-180 days. Send re-engagement campaign first, then suppress.
- **Verification**: Run list through verification service (ZeroBounce, NeverBounce, BriteVerify) before importing or after prolonged inactivity.
- **Spam traps**: Never purchase lists. Pristine spam traps (never-used addresses) are fatal to deliverability.
- **Regular pruning**: Clean list quarterly. A smaller, engaged list outperforms a large, unengaged one.

### Warm-Up Protocol (New Domain/IP)
| Week | Daily Volume | Ramp |
|------|-------------|------|
| 1 | 50-100 | Most engaged subscribers only |
| 2 | 200-500 | Expand to recent engagers (90 days) |
| 3 | 500-2,000 | Add 6-month active subscribers |
| 4 | 2,000-5,000 | Continue expanding |
| 5-8 | Double weekly | Until full volume reached |

Send to most engaged subscribers first. Monitor bounce rates (< 2%), spam complaints (< 0.1%), and inbox placement throughout.

### Spam Trigger Words to Avoid
Not as impactful as they once were (modern filters use ML, not word lists), but still worth avoiding in subject lines: "Free", "Act now", "Limited time", "Congratulations", "Winner", excessive ALL CAPS, multiple exclamation marks, "Click here", "$$$", "No obligation".

More important: consistent send volume, good engagement metrics, proper authentication, and low complaint rates.

---

## 2. List Building

### Opt-In Best Practices
| Method | Pros | Cons |
|--------|------|------|
| Double opt-in | Highest quality list, GDPR-safe, fewer spam complaints | 20-30% drop-off during confirmation |
| Single opt-in | Higher conversion rate, faster list growth | More invalid emails, higher complaint risk |
| Single opt-in + email verification | Good balance — verifies email is real without double opt-in friction | Requires verification service integration |

**Recommendation**: Double opt-in for EU audiences (GDPR). Single opt-in + verification for US/global audiences focused on growth.

### Lead Magnet Strategies That Convert (2025)
| Type | Avg Opt-In Rate | Best For |
|------|----------------|---------|
| Templates and swipe files | 5-15% | B2B, marketing, sales |
| Free tools/calculators | 10-25% | SaaS, finance, health |
| Checklists | 5-10% | How-to niches, operations |
| Mini-courses (email series) | 3-8% | Education, coaching, SaaS onboarding |
| Reports/research | 3-7% | B2B, industry thought leadership |
| Quizzes (with email gate on results) | 15-30% | DTC, health, personality-driven brands |
| Free trials / freemium | 2-5% | SaaS |
| Discount codes | 5-15% | Ecommerce, DTC |
| Webinar registration | 3-8% | B2B, education, high-ticket |

### GDPR/CAN-SPAM/CCPA Compliance Checklist
- [ ] Explicit consent for marketing emails (GDPR: affirmative action, no pre-checked boxes)
- [ ] Clear privacy policy linked at point of collection
- [ ] Physical mailing address in email footer (CAN-SPAM)
- [ ] One-click unsubscribe mechanism (CAN-SPAM + Google/Yahoo requirement)
- [ ] Honor unsubscribe within 10 business days (CAN-SPAM) — best practice: instant
- [ ] Record of consent (date, time, method, what they consented to) (GDPR)
- [ ] Right to erasure process (GDPR)
- [ ] Data processing agreement with email service provider (GDPR)

## 3. Segmentation

### RFM Segmentation
| Segment | Recency | Frequency | Monetary | Strategy |
|---------|---------|-----------|----------|----------|
| Champions | Recent | Frequent | High | Reward, ask for reviews, referral program |
| Loyal | Recent | Frequent | Medium | Upsell, cross-sell, VIP perks |
| Potential Loyalists | Recent | Low-Medium | Medium | Nurture, recommend popular products, loyalty program |
| New Customers | Very Recent | 1 purchase | Varies | Welcome series, onboarding, second purchase incentive |
| At-Risk | 30-90 days ago | Was frequent | Was high | Win-back campaign, special offer, ask what's wrong |
| Can't Lose | 90-180 days ago | Was frequent | Was high | Aggressive re-engagement, personal outreach |
| Hibernating | 180+ days ago | Low | Low | Re-engagement series, then sunset if no response |

### Engagement-Based Segments
| Segment | Definition | Send Frequency | Content Strategy |
|---------|-----------|---------------|-----------------|
| Highly engaged | Opened/clicked in last 30 days | 3-5x/week OK | Full content, new releases, exclusive offers |
| Engaged | Opened/clicked in last 60 days | 2-3x/week | Regular content, promotions |
| Passive | Opened in last 90 days, rarely clicks | 1x/week | Best content only, re-engagement hooks |
| Disengaged | No opens in 90-180 days | 1-2x/month | Re-engagement campaign |
| Dormant | No opens in 180+ days | Sunset sequence only | Final re-engagement, then remove |

### Behavioral Segmentation Triggers
- Page visited (pricing page → sales email, product page → product email)
- Content downloaded (whitepaper topic → related nurture sequence)
- Cart abandoned (abandonment recovery sequence)
- Product purchased (cross-sell, review request, replenishment)
- Feature used/not used (in-app: activation, feature adoption)
- Email engagement pattern (opens-but-never-clicks → different CTA strategy)

---

## 4. Automation Sequences

### Welcome Series (Optimal: 3-5 Emails, 7-14 Days)
| Email | Timing | Goal | Content |
|-------|--------|------|---------|
| 1 | Immediate | Deliver value, set expectations | Welcome, deliver lead magnet, what to expect, quick win |
| 2 | Day 2-3 | Build trust | Brand story, social proof, most popular content/product |
| 3 | Day 5-7 | Educate | How to get the most value, tutorial, case study |
| 4 | Day 8-10 | Soft sell | Product/offer introduction, testimonials, benefit-focused |
| 5 | Day 12-14 | Convert | Clear CTA, incentive if needed, urgency |

Welcome series benchmark: 50-60% open rate, 15-25% click rate (significantly above regular campaigns).

### Abandoned Cart (3 Emails)
| Email | Timing | Content | Expected Recovery |
|-------|--------|---------|------------------|
| 1 | 1 hour | Reminder with cart items, no discount | 5-10% of carts |
| 2 | 24 hours | Social proof, address objections, possibly free shipping | 3-5% additional |
| 3 | 72 hours | Final reminder, small discount if margin allows (5-10% off) | 2-3% additional |

Total abandoned cart recovery: 10-18% of abandoned carts. Revenue per email from cart abandonment is typically 10-20x regular promotional emails.

### Win-Back (4-Email Sunset Flow)
| Email | Timing | Content |
|-------|--------|---------|
| 1 | 90 days inactive | "We miss you" — highlight what's new, best content |
| 2 | 100 days | Social proof, customer success stories |
| 3 | 110 days | Incentive offer (discount, free trial extension, bonus) |
| 4 | 120 days | "Last chance" — final email before suppression. Clear opt-out. |

Win-back rate: 5-12% of dormant subscribers typically re-engage.

### Post-Purchase (Ecommerce)
| Email | Timing | Content |
|-------|--------|---------|
| 1 | Immediate | Order confirmation + cross-sell recommendations |

| 2 | Day 3 | Educational content — industry insight or how-to |
| 3 | Day 7 | Case study or customer success story |
| 4 | Day 14 | Deeper educational content — framework or methodology |
| 5 | Day 21 | Comparison or buying guide — help them evaluate options |
| 6 | Day 28 | Soft CTA — demo, consultation, free trial |

---

## 5. Design & Copy

### Mobile-First Design
- 60%+ of email opens are on mobile (some audiences 80%+)
- Single-column layout, minimum 14px body text, 22px+ headlines
- CTA buttons: minimum 44x44px tap target, full-width on mobile
- Keep email width 600px for desktop, responsive to 320px for mobile
- Preview in Gmail, Apple Mail, Outlook (the big three) before sending

### Subject Line Best Practices
| Tactic | Example | Impact |
|--------|---------|--------|
| Personalization | "{Name}, your weekly marketing report" | +10-15% open rate |
| Numbers | "5 ways to reduce your CAC by 30%" | +8-12% open rate |
| Curiosity gap | "The one metric most marketers ignore" | +5-10% open rate |
| Urgency (real) | "Last day: early-bird pricing ends at midnight" | +15-20% open rate |
| Question | "Are you making this common SEO mistake?" | +5-8% open rate |
| Emoji (sparingly) | "Your growth report is ready 📊" | +3-5% on some audiences |

**Length**: 30-50 characters optimal (6-10 words). Shorter for mobile visibility.

**Preview text**: 40-90 characters that complement (not repeat) the subject line. This is the second most important factor in open rates after subject line.

### CTA Best Practices
- One primary CTA per email (additional secondary CTAs OK but de-emphasized)
- Button text: Action-oriented, specific ("Get My Free Template" > "Click Here" > "Submit")
- Color: High contrast against email background. Consistent with brand but stands out.
- Placement: Above the fold for short emails, repeated for long emails
- Surrounding whitespace: 20px+ padding around CTA button

# Cold and Outbound B2B Email

Cold email is distinct from lifecycle and newsletter email. Different rules apply.

## Cold Email Voice and Mindset

- **Write like a peer, not a marketer** - no ALL CAPS, no "exciting opportunity," no corporate enthusiasm
- **Lead with their world, not your product** - open with something true about prospect's situation
- **Ruthlessly short** - 5-9 sentences max. Every sentence must earn its place
- **One ask per email** - one clear, low-friction action

## Subject Lines and Structure

Subject lines: 2-4 words, lowercase (`quick question`, `{company} + {their company}`).
No clickbait, exclamation marks, or emojis.

```
Subject: {2-4 words, lowercase}
{Opening: one sentence grounded in their world}
{Body: 1-3 sentences - your value in their terms}
{CTA: one low-friction ask - "worth a quick chat?"}
{Name}
{Title, Company}
```

**Avoid**: long intros, feature lists, "I hope this email finds you well," links or attachments in email 1.

## CTA Friction Ladder

| Friction Level | Example CTA |
|---|---|
| Lowest | "Worth a quick chat?" |
| Medium | "Open to a 15-min call?" |
| Higher | "Can I send you a demo?" (only with established relevance) |

No calendar links in the first email.

## Follow-Up Sequence (3-5 emails)

Cold email rarely converts on email 1. Sequences work. Each follow-up needs a **fresh angle** - do not just say "following up."

| Email | Timing | Angle |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Day 0 | Lead with their world, introduce your value |
| 2 | Day 3-4 | Different angle: social proof, case study result, reframed pain |
| 3 | Day 7-9 | Pivot: ask if this is even a priority right now |
| 4 | Day 14-16 | Value-add: share relevant resource, insight, or data point |
| 5 | Day 21-28 | Breakup: "Not the right time - I'll close the loop here" |

**Key rule**: After 5 emails with no reply, remove from sequence. Continuing damages deliverability and reputation.

## Personalization at Scale

Effective cold email feels personal. For scale, personalize in tiers:

| Tier | Approach | Use Case |
|---|---|
| Tier 1 (top accounts) | Fully bespoke | Research company, reference something specific |
| Tier 2 (mid-tier) | Segment-personalized | Custom first line per industry vertical or role |
| Tier 3 (high volume) | Template + merge fields | Company name, job title, industry inserted dynamically |

## Technical Hygiene for Cold Email

- Use separate sending domain (e.g., `trybrand.com`) to protect main domain reputation
- Warm up new domains 3-4 weeks before scaling
- Send plain-text or minimal HTML
- Monitor reply rates (aim 5-15%), bounce rates (under 3%), spam complaints
- Comply with CAN-SPAM, GDPR, CASL - B2B cold email to relevant prospects is permitted with proper opt-out

## Output Format

When writing cold email sequences, produce:

1. Full email copy for each step (subject + body)
2. Notes on angle used per email and why
3. Personalization variables to fill per prospect or segment
4. CTA instructions (next step in sales process when they respond)

Save to `./brands/{brand-slug}/channels/email/content/cold-outbound-{campaign-name}-{YYYY-MM-DD}.md`

## Supporting file: references/email-copywriting.md

# Email Copywriting

Write emails that get opened, clicked, and acted upon.

## Subject Line Formulas

Subject lines determine open rates. Target 30-50 characters (6-10 words). Test every send.

**Proven formulas**:

| Formula | Example |
|---|---|
| Curiosity gap | "The one thing most [audience] get wrong about [topic]" |
| Number/list | "7 [topic] mistakes costing you [outcome]" |
| How-to | "How to [achieve result] without [pain point]" |
| Question | "Are you still [common mistake]?" |
| Urgency | "[X] hours left to [benefit]" |
| Personal | "[Name], your [topic] report is ready" |
| Social proof | "[Number] [audience] already [action]" |
| Contrarian | "Stop [common advice]. Do this instead." |

**Power words**: free, new, exclusive, limited, proven, secret, instant, urgent, breaking, insider, mistake, warning, invitation, last chance.

**Spam triggers (use sparingly)**: guarantee, no obligation, act now, winner, congratulations, risk-free, 100% free, click here, buy now.

## Preheader Text

The second subject line - 40-100 characters visible in inbox preview.

- Never leave blank (email clients pull body text instead)
- Complement the subject line, do not repeat it
- Add context, intrigue, or secondary benefit
- Use as one-two punch: subject hooks, preheader sells the open

## Body Copy Structure

**Inverted pyramid**: most important message first, supporting details second, CTA third.

Best practices:
- Short paragraphs (1-3 sentences)
- One idea per paragraph
- Conversational tone matching brand voice
- Use "you" more than "we"
- Write at 8th-grade reading level
- Break up text with subheads, bold key phrases, whitespace

**For long-form newsletters**:
- Hook with story or surprising stat
- Deliver core insight
- Provide actionable takeaways
- Close with CTA
- Use the PS line (second most-read element after subject line)

## Calls to Action

One primary CTA per email. Repeat 2-3 times in different formats:

- Text link
- Button
- PS line

**Button best practices**:
- Action-oriented, specific
- First-person when possible ("Start my free trial" beats "Sign up")
- Most visually prominent element
- Add urgency or benefit context ("Join 10,000 marketers" above button)

## Personalization

Beyond first-name merge tags:

- Dynamic content blocks based on segment
- Product recommendations from purchase history
- Location-based content
- Behavior-triggered messaging
- Anniversary/milestone emails
- Personalized send times

**AI-powered options**:
- Subject line optimization per recipient
- Predictive send-time optimization
- Dynamic content selection based on engagement patterns

## ESP Comparison

| ESP | Best For | Strengths |

| **Loops** | Modern SaaS startups | Developer-friendly, event-based, clean UI |
| **Resend** | Developers, transactional-first | React Email templates, API-first, modern DX |

## Selection Criteria

Evaluate on these dimensions:

1. **Business model** - B2B, B2C, e-commerce, SaaS, creator

3. **Automation complexity** - simple sequences vs complex branching workflows
4. **Integration needs** - CRM, e-commerce platform, analytics
5. **Budget** - pay-by-contact vs pay-by-email vs flat rate
6. **Technical capability** - no-code UI vs API-first developer tools

## Decision Framework

```
If e-commerce (Shopify/WooCommerce):
  -> Klaviyo (best product integration, revenue attribution)
# Ethics: Persuasion Without Manipulation
Email marketing runs on psychological techniques - subject line curiosity, urgency, scarcity, FOMO, personalization. These tools convert but can cross into manipulation. This section defines the ethical line.
## Ethical Email Practices
Ethical email helps subscribers make decisions aligned with their interests. The subscriber who acts should be glad they did.
### Core Principles
- **Genuine scarcity** - "48 hours left" means 48 hours. Limited spots are actually limited. The offer truly expires.
- **Real urgency** - Time-sensitive emails reference actual deadlines (trial expiry, cart hold, genuine offer end) - not fabricated pressure.
- **Honest subject lines** - The email delivers on the subject line promise. "Your account" emails are about the account - not a sales pitch in disguise.
- **Clear unsubscribe** - One-click unsubscribe, honored within 24 hours. Preference centers over forced opt-outs.
- **Transparent senders** - Clear "from" name and reply address. No misleading sender names.
- **Truthful content** - Testimonials are real. Statistics are verifiable. Claims are accurate.
## Dark Patterns to Avoid
| Pattern | Description | Why It Harms |
|---|---|---|
| Fake urgency | "Last chance" emails for evergreen offers | Destroys trust; trains subscribers to ignore deadlines |
| Misleading subject lines | Clickbait that doesn't match content | High opens, low trust, spam complaints |
| Hidden unsubscribe | Buried in tiny text, multiple clicks required | Regulatory violations, reputation damage |
| Fake personalization | "Your exclusive offer" sent to entire list | Erodes value of real personalization |
| Guilt-trip opt-outs | "Are you sure you want to miss out?" | Creates resentment, not retention |
| Fake social proof | "Join 10,000 others" with fabricated numbers | Trust destruction when discovered |
| Manipulative FOMO | "Everyone's talking about this" with no basis | Trains subscribers to distrust communications |
## The Long-Term Case for Ethics
Dark patterns boost metrics short-term and destroy sender reputation long-term.
**The subscriber who feels manipulated**:
- Marks as spam (damages deliverability for everyone)
- Unsubscribes with frustration
- Leaves negative reviews
- Never opens future emails
**The subscriber who feels well-served**:
- Opens consistently
- Clicks and converts
- Forwards to friends
- Becomes a referral source
## The Ethics Test
Before sending any email, ask:
**If the subscriber understood every technique used, would they still feel respected?**
If no, rewrite the email.
### Email 2: Social Proof + Urgency (24 hours)
- **Subjects:** "[Product name] is selling fast" | "Other shoppers are eyeing your cart"
### Email 3: Final Push + Incentive (72 hours)
- **Subjects:** "Last chance: [X]% off your cart" | "A little something to help you decide"
- Purchases after any email --> stop sequence; enter post-purchase flow
- Clicks Email 2 but no purchase --> trigger Email 3 sooner (48hr)
- Cart value above $150 --> higher discount or personal outreach
- Repeat customer --> skip discount, use loyalty language
- No action after Email 3 --> wait 7 days, move to re-engagement segment
## Supporting file: references/frameworks/how-to-use-frameworks.md
# How to Use These Frameworks
1. **Select the framework** that matches your business model and goal
2. **Customize timing** based on your sales cycle and audience data
3. **Adapt subject lines** as starting points, then A/B test variations
4. **Implement branching gradually** -- start with core sequence, add branches as data comes in
5. **Measure against benchmarks** in the companion file (benchmarks.md)
6. **Iterate quarterly** -- review performance, update copy, test new structures
> Every email in a sequence should be valuable on its own. Don't create dependencies
> where missing one email makes the next one confusing.
## Supporting file: references/frameworks/newsletter-framework.md
# Newsletter Framework
**Goal:** Consistent engagement, value delivery, traffic driving. **Frequency:** Weekly/biweekly/monthly.
### Recommended Structure
| Section | % of Email | Content |
|---------|-----------|---------|
| Header | -- | Brand logo + issue number/date |
| Intro | -- | 2-3 sentence personal note or timely hook |
| Primary Content | 40% | Feature article, key insight, or announcement (image + 2-3 paragraphs) |
| Quick Hits | 30% | 3-5 bullet links: news, product tips, community highlights |
| Offer / Engagement | 20% | Product spotlight, event, survey, or referral ask |
| Footer | 10% | Social links, preference center, unsubscribe, physical address (CAN-SPAM) |
### Best Practices
- **Consistency:** Same day, same time, every send -- train your audience
- **From name:** "[Name] from [Brand]" outperforms "[Brand] Newsletter"
- **Mobile-first:** 60-70% of opens on mobile
- **One primary CTA per section** -- don't overwhelm with choices
- **Preview text:** Always customize -- never let it auto-generate
- **Track clicks by section** -- double down on what resonates
### Frequency by Audience
| Audience | Frequency | Notes |
|----------|-----------|-------|
| Ecommerce | 2-3x/week | Mix content and promotional |
| SaaS / B2B | Weekly or biweekly | Educational focus |
| Creator / Media | 1-3x/week | Content is the product |
| Nonprofit | 1-2x/month | Impact stories + donation asks |
| Local Business | 1-2x/month | Events, promos, community |
### Branching Logic
- VIP/waitlist --> early access window before public launch
- Clicked launch email but didn't buy --> "still interested?" email on Day 5
- Non-openers --> resend with new subject line 24 hours later
# List Management
Build, segment, and maintain a healthy email list.
## Segmentation Strategies
| Segment Type | Criteria | Use Case |
|---|---|---|
| Demographic | Age, location, job title, company size | Content personalization |
| Behavioral | Opens, clicks, purchases, site visits | Engagement-based targeting |
| Lifecycle | Subscriber, lead, customer, lapsed | Journey-appropriate messaging |
| Purchase | Product category, order value, frequency | Cross-sell, upsell, VIP |
| Engagement | Active (30d), passive (30-90d), inactive (90d+) | Re-engagement, list hygiene |
| Preference | Self-selected topics, frequency choices | Respect subscriber control |
**Start with**: Engagement-based segmentation (active vs inactive)
**Add as data accumulates**: Lifecycle and purchase segments
## List Hygiene
### Immediate Actions
- Remove hard bounces immediately
- Suppress soft bounces after 3-5 consecutive failures
- Run re-engagement on 90-day inactive subscribers
- Remove non-responders to protect sender reputation
### Ongoing Practices
- Validate email addresses at signup (syntax, MX record, disposable domain detection)
- Clean full list quarterly with verification service
- Target metrics: bounce rate under 2%, unsubscribe rate under 0.5%, complaint rate under 0.1%
## List Growth Tactics
### Lead Magnets
Must deliver immediate, specific value:
- Checklists, templates, guides
- Calculators, free tools, quizzes
- Exclusive reports
### Website Opt-ins
| Type | Conversion Rate |
|---|---|
| Exit intent popup | 2-5% |
| Scroll-triggered slide-in | 1-3% |
| Inline forms | 1-2% |
| Content upgrades | 5-15% |
| Landing pages | 10-30% |
### Social and Partnerships
- Promote magnets in bio links and posts
- Run lead gen ads
- Partner with complementary brands for cross-promotion
### Events and Referrals
- Webinars, workshops, challenges (registration = opt-in with consent)
- Incentivize subscribers to share (SparkLoop, ReferralHero)
## Compliance
### CAN-SPAM (US)
- Physical mailing address in footer
- Clear unsubscribe mechanism (10-day honor window)
- No misleading headers or subjects
### GDPR (EU/UK)
- Explicit opt-in consent required
- Recorded consent history
- Right to access/correct/delete
- Privacy policy link
- Data processing agreement with ESP
### CASL (Canada)
- Express consent required
- Implied consent expires after 2 years
- Sender identification required
- Unsubscribe mechanism required
### Universal Best Practices
- Double opt-in for all lists
- Preference center over binary unsubscribe
- One-click List-Unsubscribe header
- Never buy or rent lists
- Honor unsubscribes within 24 hours
For full compliance checklist, see `./references/best-practices.md`.
# Modern and Emerging Email Practices
Stay current with email technology and best practices.
## AI-Powered Email
### Subject Line Optimization
AI tools predict open rates and suggest variants:
- Phrasee, Jasper, ESP-native AI
- Test multiple AI-generated variants against human-written control
### Send Time Optimization
Per-recipient optimal send time based on historical open patterns:
- Available in Klaviyo, ActiveCampaign, Mailchimp
- Improves open rates 10-20% on average
### Dynamic Content
AI-selected content blocks personalized per recipient:
- Product recommendations based on purchase history and browsing
- Content blocks based on engagement patterns
- Offer selection based on predicted preferences
### Predictive Analytics
Inform segmentation and messaging:
- Churn prediction scores
- Purchase likelihood scoring
- Lifetime value forecasting
## Interactive Emails (AMP for Email)
In-email actions without leaving inbox:
- Surveys, polls, carousels
- Add-to-cart, appointment booking
- Accordion menus, form submission
**Support**: Gmail, Yahoo, Mail.ru
**Requirement**: HTML fallback for unsupported clients
**Use cases**:
- Product browsing
- Feedback collection
- Event RSVP
- Form submission
## Dark Mode Optimization
- Test emails in both light and dark mode
- Use transparent PNGs for logos
- Avoid images with white backgrounds (harsh contrast)
- Use `@media (prefers-color-scheme: dark)` CSS when supported
- Ensure text readable in both modes
- Test across: Apple Mail, Gmail, Outlook
## Accessibility
### Semantic HTML
- Proper heading hierarchy
- Table roles for layout tables
- Lang attribute on email element
### Visual Accessibility
- Alt text on every image (decorative images: `alt=""`)
- Minimum 14px font size
- Line height 1.5x
- Color contrast WCAG AA: 4.5:1 for text
### Layout Accessibility
- Single-column layouts for screen reader compatibility
- Bulletproof buttons (HTML/CSS, not image-based)
- Meaningful link text (not "click here")
### Testing
Test with:
- Screen readers (NVDA, VoiceOver)
- Accessibility checkers (Litmus Accessibility Checker)
## Privacy-First Email
### First-Party Data Strategy
Collect data directly through:
- Subscriber interactions
- Preference centers
- Zero-party surveys
### Reduce Open-Rate Reliance
Apple MPP impact on open tracking:
- Shift KPIs to clicks, conversions, revenue
- Open rates increasingly unreliable for engagement signals
### Transparent Data Usage
Tell subscribers:
- What you track
- Why you track it
- How they can control it
### Preference Centers
Let subscribers control:
- Frequency
- Topics/content types
- Data sharing preferences
# Newsletter Strategy
Build a newsletter that delivers consistent value and drives business outcomes.
## Newsletter Types
| Type | Frequency | Content | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Curated digest | Weekly | Links, summaries, commentary on industry news | Thought leadership, B2B |
| Original content | Weekly/biweekly | Exclusive essays, insights, stories | Personal brands, creators |
| Product update | Monthly/biweekly | Features, tips, case studies | SaaS, tech |
| Promotional | Weekly/biweekly | Offers, new arrivals, seasonal picks | E-commerce, retail |
| Hybrid | Weekly | Mix of value content (80%) and promotion (20%) | Most brands |
## Content Framework
Every issue follows this structure:
1. **Hook** - subject line + preheader + opening line
2. **Value section** - education, insights, resources (80%)
3. **Brand section** - product updates, community (20%)
4. **CTA** - one primary action
5. **Footer** - preferences, social, forward-to-friend
The 80/20 rule: 80% value, 20% promotion.
## Frequency and Send Time
**Best send days**:
- Tuesday-Thursday for B2B
- Weekends for B2C lifestyle
**Best send times**:
- 9-11am local for B2B
- 7-9pm for B2C
**Key insight**: Consistency matters more than frequency. Weekly is the sweet spot for most brands.
## Segmented Newsletters
Do not send the same newsletter to everyone. Segment by:
- Engagement level (active vs passive)
- Purchase history
- Interest tags (click behavior)
- Lifecycle stage
- Geography
Personalize content blocks, recommendations, and CTAs per segment. Basic segmentation improves click rates 20-40%.
## Growth Tactics
- **Lead magnets** - checklists, templates, guides, calculators
- **Website opt-ins** - exit intent popups, scroll-triggered slide-ins, inline forms
- **Content upgrades** - bonus content specific to page (5-15% conversion vs 1-3% generic)
- **Social promotion** - bio links, posts, lead gen ads
- **Partnerships** - cross-promotion with complementary brands
- **Events** - webinars, workshops, challenges (registration = opt-in with consent)
- **Referrals** - incentivize subscribers to share (SparkLoop, ReferralHero)
# Output Contract
Define what email deliverables look like and where they save.
## Deliverable Types
| Deliverable | Filename | Key Sections |
|---|---|---|
| Email Sequence | `sequence-{type}-{YYYY-MM-DD}.md` | Trigger, exit conditions, segment, goal, sequence map table, full email drafts, A/B test plan, success metrics |
| Newsletter Plan | `newsletter-plan-{YYYY-MM-DD}.md` | Name, frequency/timing, audience segments, content framework, subject line strategy, growth plan, editorial calendar, KPIs |
| Cold Email Sequence | `cold-outbound-{campaign-name}-{YYYY-MM-DD}.md` | Full copy per email, angle notes, personalization variables, CTA instructions |
## Path Resolution
**Campaign mode** (working within named campaign):
```
./brands/{brand-slug}/campaigns/{type}-{campaign-slug}/channels/email/content/
```
Read campaign strategy at: `./brands/{brand-slug}/campaigns/{type}-{campaign-slug}/strategy.md`
**Standalone mode** (evergreen or independent work):
```
./brands/{brand-slug}/channels/email/content/
```
**Legacy fallback** (old directory structure):
```
./brands/{brand-slug}/content/email/
```
Suggest migration to new structure.
If unsure which mode, ask: "Is this part of a specific campaign, or standalone work?"
## Sequence Map Format
For email sequences, include a sequence map table:
| Email | Delay | Subject | Message Purpose | CTA |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Immediate | [Subject] | [Purpose] | [Action] |
| 2 | Day 3 | [Subject] | [Purpose] | [Action] |
| 3 | Day 7 | [Subject] | [Purpose] | [Action] |
## Individual Email Format
Each email in deliverable includes:
```
Email Type: [welcome/nurture/sales/etc]
Subject Line: [Subject] (A/B variant: [Variant] if applicable)
Preview Text: [Preheader]
Body Copy: [Complete email ready for ESP]
CTA: [Primary action] - [link placeholder]
Sequence Position: [Where this fits in flow]
```
## Performance Reports
Monthly performance reports save to:
```
./brands/{brand-slug}/channels/email/performance/monthly-report-{YYYY-MM}.md
```
Include: key metrics vs benchmarks, test results, optimization recommendations.
## File Saved Confirmation
Every deliverable ends with:
```
File saved to: [resolved path]/[filename]
```
## Product Launch Sequence
**Goal:** Build anticipation, drive launch-day sales, sustain momentum. **Trigger:** Manual sequence tied to launch date. **Emails:** 5 (3 pre-launch + launch + follow-up).
### Email 1: Teaser (14 days before)
- **Subjects:** "Something big is coming to [Brand]" | "[Name], you'll be the first to know"
- **Elements:** Build curiosity without full reveal, hint at problem it solves, behind-the-scenes photo/teaser, invite to VIP waitlist
- **CTA:** "Get early access" or "Join the waitlist"
### Email 2: Details (7 days before)
- **Subjects:** "Introducing [Product Name] -- launching [date]" | "Here's what [Product] can do for you"
- **Elements:** Reveal product with key details, 3-5 benefit bullets (not features), product images/video/demo GIF, early-bird pricing, countdown
- **CTA:** "Pre-order now" or "Reserve your spot"
### Email 3: Social Proof (2 days before)
- **Subjects:** "Beta testers are raving about [Product]" | "[X] people already on the waitlist"
- **Elements:** Testimonials from beta/early access users, specific results, waitlist count for proof, final early-bird reminder, clear launch date/time
- **CTA:** "Secure your early-bird price"
### Email 4: Launch Day (Launch morning)
- **Subjects:** "[Product Name] is LIVE!" | "Launch day: [Product Name] + your exclusive offer"
- **Elements:** High-energy celebratory tone, clear product overview (what, who, benefits), launch-exclusive pricing with deadline, hero image/video, multiple CTAs, FAQ section
- **CTA:** "Shop now" / "Start your trial" / "Get [Product]" -- repeated throughout
### Email 5: Follow-Up (48-72 hours after)
- **Subjects:** "Launch recap: [X] people already using [Product]" | "Last chance for launch pricing"
- **Elements:** Early results (units sold, signups, reviews), customer testimonials/social reactions, last chance on launch pricing, address new questions
- **CTA:** "Get [Product] before launch pricing ends"
### Branching Logic
- VIP/waitlist --> early access window before public launch
- Clicked launch email but didn't buy --> "still interested?" email on Day 5
- Purchasers --> transition to post-purchase/onboarding immediately
- Non-openers --> resend with new subject line 24 hours later
## Newsletter Framework
**Goal:** Consistent engagement, value delivery, traffic driving. **Frequency:** Weekly/biweekly/monthly.
### Recommended Structure
| Section | % of Email | Content |
|---------|-----------|---------|
| Header | -- | Brand logo + issue number/date |
| Intro | -- | 2-3 sentence personal note or timely hook |
| Primary Content | 40% | Feature article, key insight, or announcement (image + 2-3 paragraphs) |
| Quick Hits | 30% | 3-5 bullet links: news, product tips, community highlights |
| Offer / Engagement | 20% | Product spotlight, event, survey, or referral ask |
| Footer | 10% | Social links, preference center, unsubscribe, physical address (CAN-SPAM) |
### Best Practices
- **Consistency:** Same day, same time, every send -- train your audience
- **From name:** "[Name] from [Brand]" outperforms "[Brand] Newsletter"
- **Mobile-first:** 60-70% of opens on mobile
- **One primary CTA per section** -- don't overwhelm with choices
- **Preview text:** Always customize -- never let it auto-generate
- **Track clicks by section** -- double down on what resonates
### Frequency by Audience
| Audience | Frequency | Notes |
|----------|-----------|-------|
| Ecommerce | 2-3x/week | Mix content and promotional |
| SaaS / B2B | Weekly or biweekly | Educational focus |
| Creator / Media | 1-3x/week | Content is the product |
| Nonprofit | 1-2x/month | Impact stories + donation asks |
| Local Business | 1-2x/month | Events, promos, community |
---
## Subject Line Formula Quick Reference
**Curiosity:** "The [adjective] reason [audience] are [doing X]" | "I was wrong about [belief]" | "This [small change] led to [big result]"
**Value:** "How to [result] in [timeframe]" | "[Number] ways to [solve problem] without [pain]" | "The [audience]'s guide to [topic]"
**Urgency:** "[X] hours left: [offer]" | "Last chance to [benefit]" | "Ends tonight: [offer]"
**Personalization:** "[Name], your [element] is ready" | "Based on your [action], we thought..." | "Recommended for you: [item]"
**Social Proof:** "[Number]+ [audience] already [doing X]" | "Why [company] switched to [product]" | "Rated [X] stars by [number] customers"
**Questions:** "Are you making this [topic] mistake?" | "What would you do with [extra result]?" | "Is [common approach] hurting your [metric]?"
---
## How to Use These Frameworks
1. **Select the framework** that matches your business model and goal
2. **Customize timing** based on your sales cycle and audience data
3. **Adapt subject lines** as starting points, then A/B test variations
4. **Implement branching gradually** -- start with core sequence, add branches as data comes in
5. **Measure against benchmarks** in the companion file (benchmarks.md)
6. **Iterate quarterly** -- review performance, update copy, test new structures
> Every email in a sequence should be valuable on its own. Don't create dependencies
> where missing one email makes the next one confusing.
## Quick-Reference Sequence Tables (from SKILL.md)
The tables below provide compact email-by-email timing for two high-impact sequences. Use them alongside the detailed frameworks above.
### Welcome Sequence Quick Map (3-7 emails, days 0-14)
Average 50-80% open rate on email 1. Purpose: set expectations, deliver promised value, introduce the brand, guide first action.
| Email | Timing | Content | CTA |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Immediate | Deliver lead magnet, welcome, set expectations | Access resource / explore |
| 2 | Day 1-2 | Brand story, mission, what makes you different | Read / watch / learn more |
| 3 | Day 3-4 | Top resource or quick win for the subscriber | Engage with content |
| 4 | Day 5-7 | Social proof -- testimonials, case studies, numbers | See results |
| 5 | Day 8-10 | Soft offer or product introduction | Try / explore product |
| 6 | Day 12-14 | Stronger CTA -- trial, purchase, book a call | Convert |
### Abandoned Cart Quick Map (3-4 emails, 1-72 hours)
Recovers 5-15% of abandoned carts on average. Timing is critical.
| Email | Timing | Approach |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1 hour | Reminder with cart contents, no discount |
| 2 | 24 hours | Address common objections, add social proof |
| 3 | 48-72 hours | Urgency or incentive (discount, free shipping) |
# Shared Skill Patterns
These patterns are referenced by all marketing specialist skills. Read them as part of your operating instructions.
## Starting Context Router
Choose the starting mode before doing the work. Brand workspace context is preferred, but do not block progress if the user provides a real codebase or live URL.
### Context A — Blank Page / Strategy Work
Use when the user needs strategy, planning, or a fresh roadmap. Read brand and SOSTAC context first when available, then align recommendations to audience, objections, and business goals.
### Context B — Existing Local Codebase / Implementation Work
Use when the user wants changes made or specified in an existing repository, site, product, or app. Before proposing changes, deeply research the codebase: inspect the stack, architecture, relevant files, dependencies, and existing patterns. Match existing conventions before changing anything.
### Context C — Live Website URL Audit
Use when the user provides a public URL for review. Audit the live experience first. If brand files are missing, use the live page and visible structure as the working source of truth.
## Pre-Flight: Read Strategic Context
Before any specialist work, read these files in order when available:
1. `./brands/{brand-slug}/brand-context.md` — brand identity, audience, USP
2. `./brands/{brand-slug}/product-marketing-context.md` — deep positioning, customer language, objections
3. `./brands/{brand-slug}/sostac/03-strategy.md` — target segments, positioning
4. `./brands/{brand-slug}/sostac/04-tactics.md` — channel plan, priorities
If brand files are missing but a codebase or live URL is available, continue with that as the working source of truth rather than blocking progress.
## agent-browser Setup
Before running browser-based research, check if `agent-browser` is available (`agent-browser --version`). If the command is not found, install it:
```bash
# Install the agent-browser skill (recommended)
npx skills add https://github.com/vercel-labs/agent-browser --skill agent-browser

# Or install the CLI directly
npm install -g agent-browser && npx playwright install chromium
```
If installation fails, use `WebFetch` and `WebSearch` tools as alternatives for all research tasks.
# Email Strategy Framework
Define email's role before writing a single message.
## Email Categories
| Category | Purpose | Examples | Trigger |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lifecycle | Guide subscribers through customer journey | Welcome, onboarding, nurture, winback | Behavior or time-based |
| Campaign | Drive specific business outcomes on schedule | Promotions, launches, seasonal, announcements | Calendar-based |
| Transactional | Confirm actions and deliver expected information | Order confirmation, shipping, password reset, receipts | Action-based |
## Channel Role Definition
Before building sequences, define email's role in the marketing mix:
- **Primary acquisition channel** - email captures and converts leads from other channels
- **Retention engine** - email nurtures existing customers toward repeat purchase and loyalty
- **Revenue driver** - email generates direct revenue through promotions and product recommendations
- **Relationship builder** - email delivers value (content, education, community) that deepens brand affinity
## SOSTAC Alignment
Map to the SOSTAC objectives:
- If primary objective is **acquisition** - prioritize welcome and nurture sequences
- If primary objective is **retention** - prioritize post-purchase and re-engagement
## Sequence Type Overview
| Sequence | Emails | Duration | Trigger | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Welcome | 3-7 | 0-14 days | New subscriber | Set expectations, deliver value, first action |
| Onboarding | 5-10 | 0-30 days | Purchase/signup | First success moment, reduce churn |
| Nurture | Ongoing | Weekly/biweekly | Lead capture | Educate, build trust, demonstrate expertise |
| Sales | 3-7 | 7-14 days | High-intent behavior | Convert ready leads |
| Re-Engagement | 3-5 | 7-21 days | 30-90 day inactive | Reactivate dormant subscribers |
| Winback | 3-5 | 14-30 days | 60-180 day lapse | Recover lapsed customers |
| Post-Purchase | 3-6 | 0-30 days | Purchase | Build loyalty, reduce remorse |
| Abandoned Cart | 3-4 | 1-72 hours | Cart abandonment | Recover 5-15% of lost carts |
| Upsell/Cross-sell | 2-4 | 7-30 days post | Product affinity | Recommend complementary products |
| Referral | 1-3 | Positive signal | Review, repeat purchase | Incentivize sharing |
| Feedback | 1-3 | 7-14 days post | Delivery/signup | Collect reviews and ratings |
## Framework Lookup
For complete email-by-email templates with timing and copy:
1. Open `./references/frameworks-index.csv`
2. Match `sequence_type`, `best_for`, or `tags` to user goal
3. Read only the matched framework file
4. Never load all frameworks at once
